Concept

In the conventional urban configuration, public and private buildings, large and small, are arrayed on a site so as to form open planar spaces (public) and linear spaces (roads and paths for pedestrians and vehicles) so that the buildings have access and so that natural light can enter the interiors.

In private dwellings (flats and houses), the interiors of buildings are furnished so as to permit different functions to go on inside (sitting, sleeping, cooking, etc.). Likewise, public open spaces can be provided with "street furniture" in order to activate these spaces and allow other functions (bus stops, signs, trees and greenery, etc.). It has also been claimed that public spaces are "urban living rooms", but the opposite is somehow not true, or not possible: private living rooms are not public spaces.

The purpose of this short experimental workshop is to investigate architectural form by turning the normal relationships of private and public spaces inside out. This transformation should produce hybrid spaces, new topologies and new architectural and urban forms. And whereas "conventional" architectural practice usually generates form as a response to analyzing various factors (function, material, program, urban conditions, etc.), in this project the idea is to make architecture through the "irrational" process of "eversion", a sort of Alice in Wonderland procedure where everything is turned inside out...

Process

1. Choose an actual or hypothetical living space and adjacent outdoor public space and document it in plan and section.

2. Apply inside-out transformations (eversion, inversion, twisting, weaving, puncturing, etc.).

3. Document the transformed result using sketches, renderings and/or rough models.

4. Prepare a short presentation.
